Hidden in the rolling tree-covered hills, and lying adjacent to a verdant open meadow with a winding stream accenting the setting, lies the Buxton trail head along the 21-mile Banks-Vernonia State Trail.

With the Buxton trestle in the background, this was a perfect location for an educational and interpretive shelter to tell the story of the timber railroad – an important element of Oregon’s history.

Oregon State Parks Trust helped raise $22,450 to build the Whistle Stop Community Shelter which provides information and a place for picnics and learning out of the elements.
